Maths
At Victoria Drive PRU, we teach maths during every session, and use assessments from the children’s mainstream schools to ensure our lessons provide new knowledge and skills. Our focus is on teaching the objectives from the Number strand of the National Curriculum, and we teach Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Fractions as a rolling programme.
Across Key Stage 1 and 2 we employ the maths mastery approach which scaffolds our pupils learning to move from using concrete maths resources and practical equipment to picture representations and then on to tackling abstract number problems independently. Our initial focus is to close gaps in the knowledge of the number strand before going into greater depth and applying their skills to solve number problems. We use TOBANS as a screening tool to identify difficulty in maths. We test basic arithmetic and numeracy skills to measures children’s fluency in basic number skills. Once difficulties are identified through standardised scored tests, interventions are immediately put in place to support gaps in children’s mathematical understanding. .
Where possible, we use both indoor and outdoor spaces to help relate mathematical concepts to the world around them. Our personalised maths lessons aim to deepen children’s understanding, build fluency, accelerate their progress, and support children to find the most efficient ways of calculating and solving maths challenges.
